Herd Marks

Herdmark
what is wrong?

A herdmark is used to identify the breeder of an animal.  Herd marks are usually 2-4 letters or numbers and are before an animals name on the pedigree.  See below for an explanation.

To the left is a list sorted alphabetically by herd mark.  In the future there should be lists sorted by state and name.  There are 1860 herd marks in use with the ABA.

For the pedigree below the boar's full name is GBI7 William Penn 16-14.  The herd mark for the breeder of this pig is GBI (Gregory & Beth Innerst); the 7 is the last digit of the year the pig was farrowed (1997); followed by the name (William Penn) and ear notch (16-14).

The sire of this pig is BDB5 Clarence 4-9.  The herd mark for the breeder is BDB (Brad & Ken Davis) and Clarence was farrowed in 1995.
